Kalgoorlie Distribution Main DN400 Replacement - Water Corporation
The DN400 cast iron water main in Boulder Rd, Kalgoorlie was constructed in 1935. Thickness testing by Water Corporation indicated pipe wall corrosion and risk of rupture / leakage. Design by others had realignment of the pipe under newly surfaced main road causing infeasible construction cost. Project planning identified one industrial customer with 24-hour guarantee service contract (fire safety at gas facility) and several commercial customers in the road verge, with communications services and overhead power.
WISE worked with Water Corporation to provide fit-for-purpose strategy to mitigate capital cost blow-outs and meet asset maintenance standards:
WISE investigated alternative trenchless pipe replacement contractors available including alternative slip-line epoxy pipe lining option.
Preliminary works were designed for installation of double-isolation valve arrangements in the high risk 200 m section. Excavation located hard rock surrounding the sections of the pipe. The cut pipe was found to be of greater than 20mm thickness, as class C cast iron.
Water Corporation reviewed and extended the pipe asset life and planned further testing of pipe refurbishment options, with additional budget for rock conditions.
